Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu, stated on Wednesday that "history has already answered" the question of US President Donald Trump, who, in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, asked the participants whether Europe would respond to the US call in times of need.
"The only time in its history when NATO was tested on the promise that an attack on one of the countries is an attack on all was after September 11. Romania answered the call, even without being a NATO member at the time. We understood that this was our duty and, once Article 5 was activated, Romanian soldiers embarked for Afghanistan. So did other allies. President Trump asked us now, in Davos, if Europe will answer the US call in times of need. History has already answered this question," the head of Romanian diplomacy wrote on her X page.
United States President Donald Trump delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday.
"If we told them (NATO states - ed.) that we were being attacked by I don't know which state or another state, I know them all well, I don't think they would come. We would be there if they needed us, but they don't think they would come to our aid, despite the money we spent, the blood, the sweat, the tears, they wouldn't come to help us," the American president claimed.
Following the events of September 11, 2001 in the USA, the democratic states of the world formed the International Coalition to Combat Terrorism and launched, under the leadership of the United States, Operation 'Enduring Freedom' on the territory of Afghanistan. Romania expressed its willingness to join the action to eradicate international terrorism by all means, including military.
