The Ministry of the Interior has been allocated 1.3 billion euros through the European SAFE program, and in the event of an armed conflict, police and gendarmes would be tasked with missions such as protecting military convoys and critical infrastructure, ensuring security in refugee camps, and managing uncontrolled population movements.

"For the National Defense System, Public Order and National Security component of the SAFE program, 1.3 billion euros are allocated. The Ministry of the Interior is a pillar of the state's resilience structure, with a critical role, because through its structures it operates both in peacetime and during armed conflict. For example, the police guarantee public order, protect institutions, prevent and combat crime, and ensure the security of transport hubs for military and humanitarian convoys. The Border Police maintains control at border crossing points and manages refugee flows, while the Gendarmerie, as a combat force, protects critical infrastructure, distribution networks, and maintains public order in sensitive areas and in potential refugee camps. These functions are not theoretical; they are essential for government continuity, critical infrastructure protection and the management of uncontrolled population movements. To reach this stage, a working group was set up within the Ministry of the Interior. We started from operational requirements and aligned them with technical needs and European eligibility criteria," Secretary of State Bogdan Despescu said on Monday at a press conference at the government headquarters.

He explained that, through the projects proposed under the SAFE program, the Ministry of the Interior aims to acquire a wide range of equipment, including drones, weapons and ammunition.

"The projects we propose include protection systems for high-risk mission personnel, infantry weapons and ammunition for all forces in the defense, public order and national security system, drones, anti-drone systems, and military mobility measures - support for logistics corridors, securing and streamlining essential movements, and inter-institutional cooperation. They also cover observation, identification and operational support capabilities in difficult conditions, critical communications, command-and-control systems, and civil protection warning systems. We are also targeting cyber capabilities, both defensive and proactive, and mobile systems for the continuous provision of essential digital services," Despescu said.
