Deputy Prosecutor General Codrut Olaru sent on Monday to the Senate the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) notification for formulating the indictment request on Gabriel Oprea, former Deputy Prime Minister for National Security and former Minister of the Interior, related to committing two offenses of abuse of office with obtaining undue advantages when he held the ministerial position.
"In line with the provisions of art. 109 para. 2 of the Romanian Constitution, art. 12 and art. 19 of Law no. 115/1999, art. 305 para. 4 of the Criminal Procedure Code and Decision no. 270 / 10.03.2008 of the Constitutional Court, deputy prosecutor general with the High Court of Cassation and Justice has demanded that the Senate formulate the indictment request on Oprea Gabriel, a current Senate member, for committing two offenses of abuse of office," reads a press release issued for AGERPRES by the General Prosecutor's Office.
The DNA request has been approved by Codrut Olaru, after Prosecutor General Tiberiu Nitu and his first deputy, Bogdan Licu, have abstained in this case.
According to the DNA, the offense of abuse of office is the use of human and material resources of the relevant ministry to ensure, unlawfully, a traffic police escort for Oprea's travels.
According to prosecutors, the relevant laws provide that ministers may benefit from traffic police escort only in special situations that require urgent travel. AGERPRES
