Defence Minister Radu Miruta says that the MApN budget for 2026 is RON 49.426 billion, up 19% from 2025.
Of this amount, which is 2.45% of GDP, about RON 18.8 billion (38%) go to acquisitions , the minister wrote on Friday in a social media post.
"Romania's budget for 2026 is, at the same time, a budget of correction and a budget of responsibility. We correct wrong decisions from the past, but without losing sight of the complicated context in which we live, including at international level," says Miruta.
Also, the budget secures the continuation of major modernisation programmes; investment in strategic military infrastructure; military training for up to 3,000 young volunteers; the participation of the Romanian military in foreign missions; respect for commitments to NATO and the EU.
"We managed, following negotiations in the coalition, to ensure funds for the first stage of the programme for volunteer soldiers - about 3,000 young people who will have the chance of basic military training and, perhaps, a career in the Army. Young people who will discover a new meaning in life. Romania needs trained people. But, above all, it needs people who choose to be prepared," Miruta says.
According to him, each penny must be spent fairly, transparently and efficiently. A budget responsible for defence "is not a luxury", but a "guarantee" for Romania's security.
"The Romanian armed forces have demonstrated that they have the necessary mechanisms to preserve their integrity - they do not tolerate corruption, and where there are mistakes, they are rectified. Security is not an abstract concept. It is about the tranquillity of each of us and about the confidence that, no matter how complicated the world around us is, Romania is ready," according to Miruta.
