Code Yellow warnings for cold weather, snowfall and blizzard in half Romania, Capital included

Almost half of Romania, including the Municipality of Bucharest, will come under Code Yellow warnings for cold weather, snowfall and strengthening winds starting Tuesday at 10:00, the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) announced.

According to meteorologists, between 17 February, 10:00 and 18 February, 14:00, a Code Yellow warning for significant precipitation, snow cover, strengthening winds and blizzard conditions will be in force in southern Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrogea and southern Moldavia.

During the day there will be mixed precipitation (rain, sleet and snow) in Oltenia and Muntenia, rain in Dobrogea and snowfall in Moldavia, while overnight snowfall will predominate. In this context, precipitation amounts of 25 - 30 litres per square metre will accumulate and in isolated areas more than 40 litres per square metre. Snow cover averaging 10 - 30 cm will be deposited, while wind gusts will reach 50 - 70 km/h, with blizzard conditions and visibility reduced to below 100 metres.

During the same period, a second Yellow Code warning for strengthening winds, blizzard conditions and fresh snow cover will be in force in the Southern and Curvature Carpathians, where wind gusts will reach 70 - 90 km/h. Blizzard conditions will occur, visibility will drop below 100 metres and snow cover averaging 10 - 20 cm will accumulate, equivalent to 15 - 25 litres per square metre of water.

According to the specialist forecast, a weather advisory for particularly cold conditions, generally moderate precipitation, snow cover, glaze, ice, strengthening winds and blizzard conditions will remain in force nationwide until Thursday at 10:00.

Against this background, on Tuesday (17 February) the area of precipitation will expand from the south-west and will affect the south, east and locally the centre of the country. At first there will be mixed precipitation in Oltenia and Muntenia, rain in Dobrogea and snowfall in Transylvania and Moldavia, as well as in the mountains, then from Tuesday night into Wednesday snowfall will predominate. Snow cover averaging 5 - 15 cm and locally 20 - 30 cm will accumulate.

At the same time, water amounts of 10 - 20 litres per square metre and locally over 25 litres per square metre will be recorded, and in isolated areas there will be conditions for glaze and ice.

The wind will strengthen on Tuesday in eastern Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrogea and southern Moldavia, and from Tuesday evening across most of the country, with gusts generally of 45 - 65 km/h. In the south and south-east, there will temporarily be blizzard conditions and reduced visibility.
