Former president Traian Basescu says that, in the context of events in the Middle East, the head of state, Nicusor Dan, as well as Romania 'must act quickly, without delays, postponements and hesitation,' especially as 'today it seems that the United States might need the base at Kogalniceanu.'
'Trump is looking for allies. Having fallen alone into the oil trap of the war with Iran, Donald Trump has realised that he might need Romania after in 2025 he demonstratively withdrew, to the delight of his friend Vladimir Putin, most of the troops from Kogalniceanu and, in Munich, through trumpet Vance, simply humiliated Romania. However, businessman Trump will have to learn that access to Kogalniceanu for operations in the Middle East comes at a cost,' Traian Basescu wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday morning.
The Supreme Council for National Defence, convened by President Nicusor Dan, is meeting on Wednesday from 9:30 at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace. The agenda includes topics related to the situation in the Middle East - implications for Romania, an assessment of the impact of events in the Middle East on Romania's oil market, and an analysis of the temporary deployment of certain military capabilities on Romanian territory, according to the Presidential Administration.
