1470 - Battle of Lipnik (Lipiniti), on the Nistru river. A Tatar army invades Moldova, pillaging the countryside. Romanian ruler Stefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) rebukes the invaders, following them to Lipnik, defeating them and recovering most of the stolen goods
1834 - Birth of Vasile Pogor, poet and translator, founder alongside Titu Maiorescu, Iacob Negruzzi, Petre P. Carp and Theodor Rosetti of the Junimea Literary Society (d. 20 March 1906), agerpres reports.
1839 - Romanian students in Paris found "The Society for the Education of the Romanian People", disseminating the ideology of the participants in the 1848 Revolution (founders: Ion Ghica, Alexandru G. Golescu, Dumitru Bratianu)
1864 - Birth of Ion I.C. Bratianu, politician, chairman of the National Liberal Party, several times Minister and Prime Minister, he brought his contribution to the War for National Reunification, the 1918 Union, Romania's Constitution in 1923; honorary member of the Romanian Academy (d.November 24, 1927)
1865 - By imperial decree, the Sibiu Diet is dissolved (1863-1865) and the laws voted by it through which the Romanian nation and language were recognised, are annulled (20 August/1 September)
1870 - Establishment of the "Republic of Ploiesti", a failed republican revolt against the monarchy under the leadership of Alexandru Candiano-Popescu
1872 - Death of Dimitrie Bolintineanu, poet, prose writer, dramatist, journalist, a leading participant in the Revolution of 1848 (b. 1825)
1884 - The first major newspaper in Romania, called Universul was published under the leadership of Luigi Cazzavillan (August 20)
1892 - Birth of mathematician Octav Onicescu, member of the Romanian Academy (d. August 19, 1983)
1920 - Birth of Zoe Dumitrescu-Busulenga, literary historian and critic, member of the Romanian Academy (d. May 5, 2006)
