The Arad plant of Leoni has finalised the schedule of the collective redundancies announced in December and informed the County Employment Agency that 465 employees are affected, with the first employment contracts to be terminated in March and the procedure set to conclude in August.
Executive Director of the County Employment Agency Augustin Alexandru Molnar told AGERPRES on Thursday that this is the most recent notification of collective redundancies registered by the institution and that the company has announced it will gradually lay off part of its workforce.
In total, 465 employees out of approximately 1,600 are expected to be made redundant between March and August.
'Before the employees are made redundant, we will organise a special job fair for them. We will also provide those affected with pre-redundancy services, meaning they will receive counselling on opportunities on the labour market and the benefits of reintegration into employment,' Molnar explained.
Representatives of the County Employment Agency point out that the number of people communicated by employers in collective redundancy notifications does not always correspond to the number ultimately made redundant because, before the procedure is completed, either the employer may reorganise its activity or those whose employment contracts are due to end may find work even during the notice period. There are also cases in which those targeted for redundancy meet the conditions for retirement.
Employees at the plant have confirmed to AGERPRES that severance pay will be paid to those made redundant, depending on their length of service.
At the end of December, before sending the notification to the County Employment Agency, the company informed the Arad Territorial Labour Inspectorate that it would carry out collective redundancies in the first part of 2026.
Also at the end of last year, the automotive components manufacturer Aptiv Ineu closed its factory in order to move production outside the European Union. The authorities were notified of the redundancy of around 900 employees.
In addition, at the end of June 2025, the Arad freight wagon factory Astra Rail Industries, which was owned by Greenbrier, was closed and 699 employees were made redundant.
As a result, the number of unemployed people in Arad county increased by 11% during 2025 and the unemployment rate reached 2.01% or 3,847 unemployed at the end of December, according to data from the County Employment Agency.
