Eight in ten Romanians (78%) say they are worried to a large extent about the events that affect their professional situation and income, according to the latest edition of the UNSAR-IRES Barometer on risk perception and insurance culture.
In second place in the ranking of people's main concerns are events that affect their home and material goods, including cars (77%), while events that affect life and health are only in third place (73%).
Regarding Romanians' interest in the protection offered by insurance, the UNSAR - IRES Barometer, conducted between April 30 and May 15, 2025, indicates a significant increase from last year in Romanians' interest in home insurance (55% in 2025, up 8% from 2024) and in travel insurance (50% in 2025,up 10% from 2024). Also, health insurance registered an increase of four percentage points from 2024 (49% vs. 45%).
"The results of the UNSAR - IRES Barometer confirm the fact that Romanians are becoming more and more aware of the need for financial protection, even if we are more concerned with material goods than with our own life and health. But, at the same time, data also show how important it is to invest in correct information, so that people move from a simple concern to concrete financial protection. At the moment, 54% of Romanians say that they are well and very well informed about insurance, up 3% from last year - but we still have a lot of work to do to bring insurance closer to Romanians," Alexandru Ciuncan, President & CEO of UNSAR, is quoted as saying in a press statement released by the National Union of Romania's Insurance and Reinsurance Companies (UNSAR).
The survey also reveals the main reasons that would determine Romanians to take out an insurance policy: in first place are higher incomes (36%) followed by better information on insurance (24%) and tax incentives offered by the government in the form of deductibles (22%).
The UNSAR - IRES Barometer was conducted on a nationally representative sample of 1,008 people, aged between 18 and 50 years, using the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) method, and it has a margin of error of plus/minus 3.1%, at a confidence level of 95%.
Founded in 1994, UNSAR represents 21 companies in the field. They hold a share of over 90% of the local insurance market. UNSAR's activity aims to defend and represent the interests of insurers and reinsurers in Romania, to participate in the improvement of the legislative framework in the field of insurance, to promote the insurance activity in Romania and the sustainable development of the industry domestically and internationally. In 2007, UNSAR became a full member of the Federation of European Insurers and Reinsurers - Insurance Europe.
