Three containers with almost 77 tonnes of waste consisting of unusable second-hand clothing, imported from Canada by a company from Mures County, were discovered by the authorities on Tuesday, in the seaport of Constanta. The entire quantity of waste will be returned to the sender, the Coast Guard informed on Tuesday, Agerpres reports.
There were 76,789 kilogrammes of clothing in the containers, extremely worn-out, which were not cleaned, disinfected or disinsected.
"On 11.01.2022, the border guards from the Coast Guard, in cooperation with customs inspectors from the Constanta Sud Customs Office, commissioners from the National Environmental Guard - Constanta County Commissariat and commissioners from the National Authority for Consumer Protection - Constanta County Commissariat carried out checks on three containers, loaded according to the accompanying documents with second-hand clothes, which were to be imported from Canada by a company from Mures County. After verifications, the authorities found 76,789 kg of extremely worn-out clothing, which were not cleaned, disinfected or disinsected," shows a press release of the Coast Guard.
According to the same source, the representatives of the Environmental Guard and of the National Authority for Consumer Protection have established that this is, in fact, unusable waste and cannot be put up for sale in Romania, so that the entire load will be returned to the sender.
The action benefited from the support of the European FRONTEX Agency.
In this case, investigations are being carried out under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Constanta Court of Appeal, into waste import offences violating legal provisions in force, while introducing waste in Romania to get ride of it.
