President of the Romanian College of Physicians, Catalina Poiana, emphasized on Tuesday the need for coherent policies, mechanisms to attract and retain doctors in shortage areas, adequate working conditions, and a framework that supports long-term professional development.

"On World Health Day, the Romanian College of Physicians reaffirms the message: Medical Romania Matters. Every doctor matters, regardless of where they work. Every specialty matters, including those focused on prevention and system organization. And every decision that helps build a more balanced and efficient system matters. We need coherent policies, mechanisms to attract and retain doctors in underserved areas, proper working conditions, and a framework that supports long-term professional development. We must also encourage a preventive and public-health-oriented approach, because the future of medicine means not only treating diseases, but preventing them. Romania has doctors, but it also needs human resources. Medical Romania has competence. Medical Romania has potential. Romanian doctors must be supported and valued," Poiana said in a press release.

Currently, 61,934 doctors with free-practice permits are registered with the Romanian College of Physicians, along with over 22,000 resident doctors in training across all specialties. According to Poiana, these figures reflect the current potential of the Romanian medical system.

The College notes that the issue is not only the number of doctors, but also how they are distributed and integrated into the system, with significant imbalances persisting between urban and rural areas, and between major university centers and less developed regions.

There are still communities where access to medical services remains limited, either because certain specialties are missing locally or because conditions are insufficient to attract and retain doctors.

"These realities show that the challenge for the health system is no longer just training doctors, but also the intelligent and equitable use of human resources, as well as the development - and, more importantly, the implementation - of coherent human-resources policies in health. The Romanian College of Physicians reaffirms its commitment to participate as a dialogue partner," the release concludes.
