National chairman of the Save Romania Union (USR) Dacian Ciolos says impeaching President Klaus Iohannis is not a solution to the current crisis, agerpres reports.
"From our point of view, impeaching the President now is not a solution. We do not see what that would contribute to resolving the crisis we are now going through. We, USR, continue to insist and demand that the National Liberal Party (PNL) take ownership of that," he told Digi 24 private broadcaster on Monday.
The USR leader called for the former ruling coalition that included USR and PNL to be rebuilt around a government that would take reforms and measures to get the country out of the crisis.
"We have witnessed a total lack of openness in discussing the restoration of the coalition in recent days. Mr Ciuca was designated prime minister. We expected him to really look for a solution to mount a majority in Parliament," Ciolos said.
The USR leader added that he did not talk to Nicolae Ciuca or Florin Citu these days. On the other hand, he reiterated that USR will not support a minority government.
Regarding early elections, Ciolos said they will not solve the current problems, but mentioned that if "there is no other solution," USR "is not afraid" of early elections.
Opposition Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) Co-Chairman George Simion announced on Monday the initiation of proceedings to impeach Iohannis.
First Deputy Chairman of the opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD) Sorin Grindeanu said on Monday that if and when USR joins impeaching Iohannis, PSD's governing forums will also discuss the matter and make a decision.
