Romania could be represented at the first meeting of the Board of Peace (BoP) on 19 February only if the countries that are not signatories to the Charter are also accepted in this format, political sources said on Thursday.
According to the same sources, Romania is postponing the signing of its accession to the BoP initiated by Donald Trump.
The quoted sources also said that the head of state is scheduling a visit to Poland, in order to strengthen the bilateral relationship.
On 8 February, President Nicusor Dan announced that he had received an invitation to attend the first meeting of the Board of Peace, which will take place in Washington on 19 February, stating that the decision regarding Romania's participation will be taken following consultations with the US partners.
"As I have said before, Romania welcomes the efforts of the US Administration to promote peace," Nicusor Dan conveyed at the time, in a post on his Facebook page.
According to him, after receiving the invitation, Romania initiated discussions with the United States in order to clarify the compatibility of the Board of Peace Charter with the international commitments already undertaken.
"Since receiving the invitation to join the Board of Peace last month, Romania has launched a process of consultations with the United States to clarify to what extent certain provisions of the Board of Peace Charter can be revised or interpreted so as to be fully compatible with the international obligations already undertaken by the Romanian state," President Nicusor Dan explained.
