Prosecutor General Tiberiu Nitu is arguing that he only received the personal security measures provided for by the law and that it is his duty to make sure the activity of the Public Prosecution Service will be conducted under normal circumstances.
"Given the public comments about me, I want to say that during my entire magistracy career and in the office of Romania's attorney general, I have always been preoccupied with observing the law and deontological rules. From that point of view, I would like to say that part of my activity as attorney general with the Prosecution Office of the Supreme Court of Justice and Cassation I was provided only the personal security measures provided for in the law, proportional to the risks and responsibilities of the office," Nitu said in a press statement released on Thursday.
He gave assurances that his activity is not affected, influenced or disturbed by the judiciary demarches underway to clarify the situation of the use of official motorcades.
"I can assure all my collaborators at the Public Prosecution Service, all our institutional partners and all of Romania's citizens that our activity - mine as well - is not affected, influenced or disturbed by the judiciary demarches underway to fully clarify the situation, and I want to keep to my reservation over the actions deployed to that end. It is my duty, as the prosecutor general, to make sure that the activity of the Public Prosecution Service will be conducted under normal circumstance and within the parameters of efficiency mentioned in the latest report on Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM)," said Nitu.
Nitu's reaction comes after a meeting on Wednesday with Justice Minister Raluca Pruna on his implication in a scandal over the use of official motorcades. Both avoided press statements after the meeting.
In a court file opened by DNA on former Deputy Prime Minister for Security and Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea it is mentioned an allegation that Nitu would have illegally used the motorcades.
Judiciary sources say Nitu allegedly used the official motorcade nearly 700 times for travelling between April 2014 and October-November 2015.
