The governing coalition is functioning better than is commonly perceived, despite claims that it is 'in great pain' and "notwithstanding the mutual attacks between the parties", President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday evening.
"Of course, I would like many things to be different. However, in broad terms, despite the mutual attacks the parties launch against each other" and the general perception - and I would like to emphasise that it is only a perception - that the coalition is in great pain. I believe that the way in which the coalition operates, the way in which it reaches agreement on certain legislative acts and assumes responsibility for them, shows that this coalition is actually working better than it is perceived to be,' the President told a press conference held during the informal meeting of the leaders of the Council of Europe.
He added that he has frequent one-to-one meetings with the coalition leaders and that he also convenes group meetings whenever the situation requires.
Referring to Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna's remarks that the president is no longer as involved as he was at the beginning of his mandate, Dan said he would become more engaged once discussions on the 2026 budget begin.
"There is a difference between the situation back then and the one we are in now, because during that period, until the government was formed, I had dozens of meetings with various state institutions discussing the budget and the deficit. At that time, I personally had very detailed information about what the budget should look like, and it seemed important to me to be involved. The 2026 budget is also very important to me and, as soon as discussions begin, I will get involved. However, I no longer have the same level of detailed information as I did then,' Nicusor Dan said.
