National Culture Day is celebrated every day when, to the applause of the audience, the curtain rises, according to a message released on Thursday by the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre of Bucharest.
"For the National Theatre I. L. Caragiale, the celebration of National Culture Day does not take place only on 15 January each year. It is celebrated every day when - to the applause of the audience - the curtain rises... Because the National Theatre is, by its very definition, one of the strongest symbols of culture and national identity, bearing the stature of a national cultural brand. Romania can be seen at its most beautiful from the theatre stage. Theatre is a 'success story'. Actors and their performances can take Romania out into the world and can make the world come to us," the TNB states on its website.
Representatives of the National Theatre note that "Romanian culture is celebrated every day on its stages", and that 15 January 'is not only a day dedicated to paying tribute to Mihai Eminescu".
"15 January is not only a day dedicated to honouring Mihai Eminescu, 'the complete figure of Romanian culture' and a symbol of national identity, marking today 176 years since his birth. It is also a symbolic day that gives us the opportunity to reflect on the identity values of Romanian culture, as well as the duty to highlight them through events meant to tirelessly reaffirm the role of national culture in the development of society," reads the TNB message.
Romanian culture has enjoyed an official national celebration since 15 January 2011, established on the anniversary of the birth of poet Mihai Eminescu, on the initiative of academician Eugen Simion, then President of the Romanian Academy, and enacted by the Romanian Parliament in 2010. Now in its 16th edition, National Culture Day is celebrated both in Romania and abroad.
