Justice Minister Tudorel Toader presented on Friday, on Facebook, the measures taken by the Ministry of Justice between February and December 2017 for the development of the penitentiary system, informing that in the budget for the current year investment funds were earmarked for the creation of over 5,000 new places of detention between 2019 and 2023.
Also, it was set out the establishment of the National Institute of Penitentiary Administration, an institution that would provide training for the staff of the National Administration of Penitentiaries.
As far as the financing part is concerned, he informed that on December 5, 2017, the Government adopted the Memorandum on the Decision regarding timeliness of financing the physical infrastructure of the Romanian penitentiary system by a project financed from reimbursable foreign funds.
As to the cooperation and dialogue for strengthening the penitentiary system, in 2017 the minister of justice participated in meetings with representatives of trade union organizations in the judiciary and in the Joint Committee for Social Dialogue, with consultations on human resources issues, career and legislative changes on the status of the staff of the National Penitentiary Administration, the salaries and the working conditions of this professional category.
