President Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday that he would call on the European Partnership Summit to involve the European Union more intensely and more frequently in resolving conflicts affecting partners and give the chance to those who want to do more, giving as an example the Republic of Moldova, agerpres reports.
"It is a long-awaited summit, and it is quite clear that there are expectations on both sides. We, in the Union, expect our partners to do what they are committed to doing, for example through association agreements. On their part, of course, there are expectations from the Union to support, assist and guide them. In my address I will ask, among other things, for two things: the first - for the European Union to get involved more, more intensely and especially in resolving conflicts that affect our partners. The second thing refers to the different speed with which our partners move. It is clear that some are moving faster, they are willing to do more, as is the case in the Republic of Moldova, where we have an administration now that is willing to make the necessary reforms and move faster towards the European Union, and my request is in the sense of giving the chance to those who want to do more to do so," the head of state said before attending the Eastern Partnership Summit.
He said he would make more remarks on the European Council meeting on Thursday.
The Sixth Eastern Partnership Summit is chaired by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. Participating will be heads of state and government of the EU member states, the leaders of the five partner states - the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
A joint Declaration is to be adopted at the summit, which will set out the strategic vision for the post-2020 period of the Eastern Partnership.
The head of state is due to attend a European Council meeting on Thursday.
