INS: Electricity, cocoa and rail fares record steep annual price increases

Electricity recorded the sharpest price increase in January, rising by 59.33% year-on-year, although it fell slightly compared with the previous month, by 0.44%. Significant annual increases were also registered for cocoa and coffee, up by 25.27%, and for rail transport, which rose by 24.40%, according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In the food category, further price increases were recorded for fresh fruit, up by 17.14% in January 2026 compared with January 2025. Year-on-year price decreases were registered for potatoes, down by 10.77%, and for dried beans and other pulses, down by 3.52%. On a month-on-month basis in January, the largest increases were recorded for other vegetables and vegetable preserves, up by 4.26%, and for vegetables and vegetable preserves, up by 3.58%. Slight decreases were recorded for sheep's cheese (telemea), down by 0.06%, and for maize meal, down by 0.03%.

As regards non-food goods, the steepest price rises were recorded for electricity and thermal energy, the latter increasing by 15.61% year-on-year, as well as for books, newspapers and magazines, up by 10.10%. No annual price decreases were recorded in this category. Compared with the previous month, the largest increases were seen in fuels, up by 1.82%, and tobacco and cigarettes, up by 1.17%. Price reductions were recorded for natural gas, down by 0.82%, and for electricity, down by 0.44%.

In the services sector, the most significant price increases were recorded for rail transport, which rose by 24.40% over the past year, water supply, sewerage and sanitation services, up by 17.59%, and hygiene and cosmetic services, up by 17.75%. By contrast, postal services became cheaper by 3.44%.

Month-on-month in January, notable increases were recorded for air transport, with fares rising by 9.78%, and for water supply, sewerage and sanitation services, up by 9.08%. Urban transport subscriptions, however, fell by 0.16%.
