The Government on Thursday approved, through a draft law, the ratification of the Agreement between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on the introduction of coordinated controls on Romanian territory, in both directions, at the Falciu (Romania) - Cantemir (Republic of Moldova) railway border crossing point, signed in Bucharest on 1 October 2025.

According to a Government press release, the agreement creates the bilateral legal framework for conducting coordinated controls of persons, goods and railway transport vehicles at a single point, in Falciu railway station, with the participation of the relevant authorities from both states.

"Unlike other border crossing points where coordinated control is carried out only for entry traffic, in this case checks will be performed in both directions of travel. The implementation of this system aims to facilitate the transit of persons and accelerate the transport of goods between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, contributing to smoother border traffic and to the development of alternative railway transport routes," the press release reads.

The reopening of the Falciu - Cantemir railway border crossing point, which has been non-operational since 2010, is of strategic importance, as it will contribute to reconnecting the Republic of Moldova to European railway corridors and to developing transport routes to Romanian ports, including the port of Constanta, the source also says.

"The agreement establishes the principles of cooperation between the authorities of the two states in carrying out coordinated controls, the duties of the personnel involved, the organisation of control activities, as well as aspects regarding data protection and legal responsibility. The document has an initial validity of 12 months, at the end of which the competent authorities will evaluate the efficiency of the coordinated control mechanism and decide on the continuation of cooperation," the press release also shows.

The draft law will be sent to Parliament with a request for it to be debated on and adopted under an emergency procedure.
